January 5th, 2010 - SPEP Week 1 Reminders

Posted by Jackie in Faculty Updates

Hi Class,

We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday!!  Here are some quick reminders for the 1st week of SPEP:

  1. Check EMS and ROSI to make sure everything is correct (ie. your courses, forms, immunizations) and that any extra requirements by your SPEP site have been fulfilled.
  2. Fill out your SPEP Work/Education Placement agreement form and fax it in to Lucy Gabinet (416-946-3841) within 1-2 days of the start of your rotation.
  3. Go over Form PB verbally with your preceptor during the first week – this does not need to be handed in until both week 4 and week 8 of your rotation.
  4. Briefly think about your learning objectives (personal & site-specific) and be prepared to discuss it with your preceptor during the first week and put this into your learning portfolio as you will have to review this with your next preceptor at your next SPEP rotation – this does not need to be handed in until week 2 of your rotation.

Just so everyone knows what they need to do, have a quick run-through of your syllabus one more time on your own.  Also, remember to keep your own copies of all the forms that you either fax/hand in just in case!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact us or if they are of an urgent nature, refer to page 2 of the SPEP syllabus to contact the appropriate administrative staff.

That’s all for now!  We’ll be sending updates every weekend to keep everyone on track.  Have fun and learn lots at SPEP.

Cheers,
Jackie & Alana

November 14th, 2009 - *important!* PEBC presentation, Q&A period (with Zubin Austin), PEBC pre-test

Posted by steph in Council Admin

Hey Class!

Some of you have probably noticed on the global calendar that there are 2 events coming up that have to do with PEBC, so here is a bit of information on them!

 1) PEBC presentation and Q&A period: Tues. Nov. 24, 12-2pm, PB B150

A PEBC Board Member, Peter Gdyczynski, will be here to give a presentation about PEBC and the Qualifying Examination that will last approximately 1.5hrs. To fill up the remaining half hour, Zubin Austin will be holding a question and answer period about basically what we do after we graduate – for example: the importance of keeping our learning profile updated, attending CE seminars etc. This is a great opportunity to get some answers so please come with any questions you may have!  Alternatively, you can email me at stephaniehedy.chan@utoronto.ca with your question(s) and I can pass it on to him beforehand to address if you don’t feel comfortable asking him in front of the class. (Our PHM428 exam ends at 11:30am so you have some time to grab some food before attending the presentation.)

 2) PEBC pre-test: Fri. Nov. 27, 2:30pm, EX 100

Let me start by saying that this is optional but highly recommended!  In addition to conducting the Qualifying Examination that we will be doing, the PEBC is also responsible for assessing the qualifications of pharmacists trained outside Canada. Thus they administer an Evaluating Examination designed to determine if the applicant has an academic background comparable to that obtained in the baccalaureate programs in Canada. PEBC is asking the graduating classes to participate in a one-hour pre-test consisting of only 55 m/c questions to determine the standards for the Evaluating Examination. This is a great opporutnity for you to experience what the PEBCs will be like in term of the process that occurs on the day of our actual exam. Furthermore, ~80% of the 0T9s participated last year and found it to be very beneficial.

Monetary incentives will be provided! $50 will be awarded to the student who achieves the highest pre-test score in our class. In addition, our class as a whole will be rewarded based on our overall participation rate! If 51-75% of our class participates, we will be receiving $200; 76-100% $300. Furthermore, if our class receives the highest school pre-test average, we will receive 1.5x the amount awarded for participation. We can use this money towards our grad fund, a charity etc.

The pre-test is scheduled for 2:30pm on Fri. Nov. 27 to give enough time for students to head over to EX100 after the Canadian Armed Forces presentation and lunch (1-2pm). Doris Kalamut will be giving a brief talk prior to starting the test but the test is only 1 hour long.

If you are interested in participating in this pre-test, please RSVP by commenting on this post.

THERE IS NO LONGER A RSVP DEADLINE. Please continue to comment.

 Thanks,

Stephanie

November 3rd, 2009 - Safeway recruiting for Washington

Posted by saeed in Recruitment Updates

Hi everyone,

Safeway, a chain that is located in the States and Western Canada, will be having interviews this Thursday (Nov 5) at the career center from 9-5.

They are actually flying in from Washington State and their primary goal is to recruit UofT students for several Washington locations. It is also possible to ask about other locations, but remember they are mainly Washington reps. I believe 3-4 UofT students signed a contract with them last year.

If you are interested, please view this PDF: Opportunities in Central Washington

If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Clare Gilderdale from the career center at: c.gilderdale@utoronto.ca
