January 5th, 2010 - SPEP Week 1 Reminders

Posted by Jackie in Faculty Updates

Hi Class,

We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday!!  Here are some quick reminders for the 1st week of SPEP:

  1. Check EMS and ROSI to make sure everything is correct (ie. your courses, forms, immunizations) and that any extra requirements by your SPEP site have been fulfilled.
  2. Fill out your SPEP Work/Education Placement agreement form and fax it in to Lucy Gabinet (416-946-3841) within 1-2 days of the start of your rotation.
  3. Go over Form PB verbally with your preceptor during the first week – this does not need to be handed in until both week 4 and week 8 of your rotation.
  4. Briefly think about your learning objectives (personal & site-specific) and be prepared to discuss it with your preceptor during the first week and put this into your learning portfolio as you will have to review this with your next preceptor at your next SPEP rotation – this does not need to be handed in until week 2 of your rotation.

Just so everyone knows what they need to do, have a quick run-through of your syllabus one more time on your own.  Also, remember to keep your own copies of all the forms that you either fax/hand in just in case!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact us or if they are of an urgent nature, refer to page 2 of the SPEP syllabus to contact the appropriate administrative staff.

That’s all for now!  We’ll be sending updates every weekend to keep everyone on track.  Have fun and learn lots at SPEP.

Cheers,
Jackie & Alana

October 5th, 2009 - Weekly Update

Posted by alana in Faculty Updates

Hi Class!

Here are the updates and reminders for this week…

1. Peer/Self evaluations for therapeutics are due on Friday.

2. PHM 456 (Pediatrics) midterm is on Monday: 9:30-11:30 in GB 304

3. PHM 462 (Substance Abuse) midterm is on Friday

4. PPL prelab tutorial: since next week is Thanksgiving, there will
be no tutorial on Mon Oct 12. So Debra will be covering both
cardiology and depression tomorrow.

5. Rescheduling of PHM 428 exam: A reminder that we are working with
Zubin to write the exam before the December exam period (probably
November 24). This will give us two weeks to study for the exam
(which Zubin says will be easy), and will also allow us to finish our
December exams earlier! But if anybody has any problems with this
change, please contact either jackie.chong@utoronto.ca or
alana.minty@utoronto.ca . Any issues will be kept strictly
confidential, but we need to be sure that what we do will be fair for
everybody. Please let us know tonight so that we can work on getting
the date set more firmly.

6. PHM 425: We reminded Prof Machado that we need a break halfway
through class, so hopefully we can all pay more attention this week!
We are also aware that the session 5 slides are not accessible ? we
have contacted him about this and hopefully they will be available soon.

That?s it! It?s a busy week, but next weekend is Thanksgiving, so
we?ll have a well-deserved day off!

September 13th, 2009 - Week 3 Update

Posted by alana in Faculty Updates

Hi 1T0!

We are starting week 3, and things are starting to get busy! This is a long email, but hopefully we’ve covered everything for the week.

1. PPL this week: everybody has their “lab” on Tuesday in KP 108. Tuesday students meet at 9:00 and Thursday students meet at 10:00. Don’t forget to do the prelab questions (found on Blackboard), because they need to be handed in at the start of class.

PPL prelab teaching sessions will be held on Mondays from 12-1 in PB 850. They start this week, so if you are concerned about your performance in the first practice lab, be sure to attend either this week or next week.

2. Lalitha is still looking for some volunteers for our therapeutics class. She needs 3 volunteers to help with the interviews for the patient interviews we will be doing over the next few weeks.

She would also like a group of people to meet with her after class on Sept 30 and October 30. This will be a short meeting to provide her with feedback so that our class can get the most out of this course.

If anybody is interested in either of these, please email jackie.chong@utoronto.ca

3. Reminder that our research topic submissions are due next week (Sept 25). So it’s time to start thinking about potential topics, and who you want to work with (or you can work alone if you’d like).

4. Professor Batal who teaches the industry class (PHM 454) is new to our faculty, and so is eager for any feedback regarding the course. You can email the prof directly at rami.batal@utoronto.ca, or if you’d like to remain anonymous, email either of us and we will pass on any comments.

5. There are a few classes that neither of us are in, so it is hard for us to keep up with due dates, etc in these classes. A list of these classes is below. We are looking for one person from each class to help us out over the term by letting us know about important dates, etc, so that we can keep everybody informed. If anyone is interested, please email alana.minty@utoronto.ca

PHM 450 (Aboriginal Issues)
PHM 454 (Industry)
PHM 456 (Pediatrics)
PHM 457 (Natural Health Products)
PHM 458 (Community)
PHM 460 (Marketing)

6. The weekly schedule is attached, and will also be posted on our class website at 1t0.uoftpharmacy.com. Our class council also regularly update our class calendar with many important dates. Check it out at http://1t0.uoftpharmacy.com/?page_id=88 and bookmark it for future reference!

Have a great week!

Jackie and Alana

September 5th, 2009 - Class Updates for Week 2 (Sept. 7-11)

Posted by Jackie in Faculty Updates

Hi Class,

We hope the first week (3 days) of classes went well for everyone.

Here are just some quick updates about what will be going on next week:

  1. Monday, Sept, 7, 2009 is Labour Day.  We do not have school!  YAY =D
  2. PHM429 – Groups 1-15 will be doing their Practice PPL on Asthma/COPD on Tuesday and Groups 16-30 on Thursday.  Everyone try to be there by 8:50am so that things run smoothly on the first day.
  3. PHM421 – Lalitha has requested 3 volunteers for patient interviewing for the cardiology/stroke patient that will be coming in.  Also,  she would like to have 10 volunteers to meet with her on both Sept. 30 and Oct. 30 to give some feedback on the course.  This will be a short, informal 15 minute meeting right after class.  Please email jackie.chong@utoronto.ca to sign up for it.  It will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.
  4. PHM427 – We are aware that some of the links to the readings are not working.  They will be fixed in time for those lectures.
  5. PHM458 – The required textbook will be available for purchase through the CPhA.  To order, please wait for an announcement from Stephanie Chan (class president).
  6. Most exam dates have not been 100% confirmed.  We are going to be checking with Linda Chung to try to make it so that we will not have more than 1 exam each day.  We will update everyone as soon as we find out.

If you guys check out the class website: http://1t0.uoftpharmacy.com/ you will find that a calendar has been posted up there.  We will be updating that as the term goes on with assignment deadlines, exam dates, school events, etc.  Please check it often as it is a very busy term.

Please check the Weekly Class Schedule & Updates for room changes and updates on tutorial locations and professor office hours.

Cheers,

Jackie & Alana
